August 2008 Newsletter

WE ARE WHAT WE EAT!

Those bright colorful fruits and vegetables from our gardens can enhance our new healthier eating. Try new recipes, use new spices, and try 5-6 meals/day instead of the large 3 meals. Think dietrary enhancement, not deprivation. When people enjoy what they eat, they feel more positive about life, which helps them feel better. But remember, that occasional little splurge sometimes gives us the energy to keep up with our new dietary changes.

Everyone's goal should be to decrease our salt intake, encourage exercise, and encourage hydration by drinking 32-64 oz. of water per day (as long as you are not on fluid intake restriction).

What we eat can effect our health! In a Harvard Medical School study, 72,000 women were followed. They found those women eating a healthy over all diet had 28% lower risk of dying from heart disease and a 17% lower risk of death from diabetes, stroke, and cancer. The "healthy" eater's diet consisted of a high intake of vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, fish, poultry, and low intake of red processed meat, refined grains, French fries and sweets.

Try to get out in the sun for 10 minutes 2-3 times a week for that vitamin D. We need the vitamin D for healthy bones and a healthy heart. Let have a great summer!
